The activation journey: my 5-step approach to getting unstuck

Most self-sabotage isn't fixed by trying harder. It's fixed by working differently, at a level deeper than the habit itself. You don't need to become someone else. You need to understand how you do function.

That's what the Activation Journey is built for. If Origin, Imprint, Expression explained the anatomy of why a pattern exists, this is the roadmap for actually working through it. It's the 5-step approach I use with almost every client, adjusted to their pattern.

1. define what you want

Your inner compass never stopped working, you just stopped listening to it. This step turns "what do I want to get rid off" into "what I do want". This allows your system to move in a concrete direction.

What this can look like: I sleep peacefully. I give my opinion. I trust my partner. I make good decisions quickly. I know what I want. I relax.

2. understand what blocks your potential

Here we dive into what is blocking you from experiencing what you want on both the levels expression and imprint. (If this doesn't ring a bell, read Origin, Imprint, Expression first to understand the anatomy of self-sabotage).

This is typically the hardest step to do alone, since the beliefs running the show are the ones you're least likely to catch yourself.

What this can look like: Catching yourself checking email at 11pm, just in case. Coming to the conclusion that you don't trust anyone to the work well. Creating a link between not speaking up and the lump in your throat.

3. discover your activation resources

Your self-sabotaging patterns actually contain real strengths. That's why you subconsciously keep doing them. Before letting anything go, we make sure to keep the value of limiting patterns. Additionally, we build a felt sense of the capability, and inner resources you can lean on through the rest of the process.

What this can look like: Understanding the value of pleasing people. Integrating the feeling of a challenge you handled well.

4. release what no longer serves you

Every strategy you're currently running, perfectionism, people-pleasing, over-preparing, also gives you something. Every annoying sensation in your body (even those tight shoulders) is telling you something. We find out what that is, so you can release what no longer serves you.

This is the deeper work. We update the imprint itself, both the belief and the stored tension your body has been holding onto since it couldn't fully react at the time. Insight alone rarely reaches this level, which is why this step almost always benefits from support. As the imprint shifts, its expression, the behaviour you actually notice day to day, tends to shift with it.

What this can look like: no longer using work to avoid what's happening at home. Stepping back from a relationship where you're always giving and rarely receiving. Experiencing what it is like to get rid of that heavy tension in your chest. Ability to just breathe normally again.

5. create new patterns and skills

Water doesn't force its way downhill, it just flows there once nothing's in the way. Your potential tends to work the same way. This step is about practicing the new pattern, boundaries, clearer choices, a pause between trigger and reaction, until it stops feeling like effort and starts feeling like you.

What this can look like: closing your laptop at 6pm without the guilt. Saying no calmly, without rehearsing it 10x mentally first. Making a decision quickly because you actually trust your own judgment.

why all the steps matters

Most self-help starts and ends at step five, a new habit stacked on top of an unexamined belief. Sustainable change doesn't work like that.

Work through the different steps, and something shifts. It starts to feel less like willpower and more like the moment you learned to ride a bike, the point where you stopped thinking about balancing and just rode.
